Russian National Teams Are Off To European Championship

Competitions to be held in Crete, Greece. 

The European Team Championships among men and women will be held from October 27th (arrival) until November 7th (departure) 2017 in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece. 40 and 32 teams are registered in the open and women’s sections respectively. 

The Russian teams, the defending champions of the Old World, are rating favorites in both events. 

Russian national team: Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxim Matlakov, Nikita Vitiugov, Daniil Dubov, captain - Alexander Motylev. 

Main rivals of our chess players will be the teams of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, England, Israel, Armenia, Hungary, and Poland. 

Russian women’s national team: Alexandra Kosteniuk, Kateryna Lagno, Valentina Gunina, Olga Girya, Aleksandra Goryachkina, captain - Sergei Rublevsky.  

The national teams of Ukraine, Georgia, and Poland are heading the starting list as well. 

General sponsor of the Russian national teams is Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy System (FGC UES). 

A respective agreement was signed in December, 2015. Chairman of the Management Board of PJSC Federal Grid Company Andrey Murov and President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey Filatov affixed signatures to the document. Thanks to the Company’s support, many official events of the RCF are being held as well, e.g. a series of the Russian and international tournaments, including children’s competitions.
