Alexander Morozevich Has Turned 40!

Multiple Olympic Champion celebrates his anniversary. 

On July 18, a Russian grandmaster Alexander Morozevich celebrates his 40th anniversary. Our congratulations to the outstanding chess player!

Alexander is the winner of many very strong international tournaments. He has represented Russia in seven Olympiads and other team events, winning numerous team and board medals. Morozevich is a two-time World Championship Candidate and a two-time Russian Champion. For several years he has been in TOP 10 and sometimes in TOP 5 of the FIDE rating list. 

Morozevich is one of the most original grandmasters of our time. He has never been an opening expert; vice versa, he prefers to wage a fight in middlegames. But Morozevich manages to surprise his opponents even in a very well-known theoretical positions, reviving old lines and finding new ideas in typical structures. He is original not only at the chessboard, but also outside of it, which seems to make him even more popular among chess lovers. 

Morozevich is against half measures: he is always fighting till the very end, using all resources to continue playing. However, from time to time, Alexander quits chess. Thus, in 2010, he had almost stopped playing in tournaments, but, as a result, the interest in him grew a lot. After his return in 2011, which started after his winning the Russian Higher League in Taganrog, Morozevich was performing successfully at many tournaments: he took 2nd places in Biel and the Russian Championship Superfinal and won the super tournament in Saratov. He was close to win Tal Memorial in 2012 and became the winner of the super tournament in Poikovsky in 2014. 

Recently, Alexander has seldom played in classical tournaments but his results in rapid and blitz events are rather high. In particular, he won several stages of the Russian Rapid Grand Prix. Some years ago he got interested in Go. On a regular basis, he meets with Go amateurs, as well as with chess lovers.
