Altibox Norway Chess Tournament Starts in Stavanger

Russia is represented by Vladimir Kramnik and Sergey Karjakin

On Monday, June 5, the fifth edition of the Altibox Norway Chess super tournament takes off in Stavanger, Norway. The event is the strongest tournament of 2017 with an average rating of 2797. 

The line-up is: Magnus Carlsen (Norway, 2832), Wesly So (USA, 2812), Vladimir Kramnik (Russia, 2808), Fabiano Caruana (USA, 2808), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France, 2796), Levon Aronian (Armenia, 2793), Viswanathan Anand (India, 2786), Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 2785), Sergey Karjakin (Russia, 2781), and Anish Girl (Netherlands, 2771).   

The tournament starts Monday evening with the traditional blitz tournament to determine the pairing numbers.

Then, nine rounds will be played according to the round-robin system between 6 and 16 June, with rest days on 9 and 13 June. 

The first six rounds will be played in the Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger. Then the tournament moves to the Stavanger Concert Hall for the last three rounds.

The tournament has a total prize fund of 249,000 Euro ($281,000) with a first prize of 70,000 Euro ($79,000).
