Ding Liren Becomes New World Champion

He outplayed Ian Nepomniachtchi at the tie-breaker.

The FIDE World Championship Match between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren has finished in the city of Astana. April 30 saw a tie-breaker match following a 7-7 draw in the classical part of the match.

Three rapid games featuring the 25+10 time control ended in a deadlock, but Game 4 was taken by the Chinese grandmaster. Therefore, Ding Liren is the first Chinese chess player to become World Champion.

President of the Chess Federation of Russia Andrey Filatov:

- On behalf of the Chess Federation of Russia I would like to congratulate Ding Liren, the Chinese Chess Association, and all chess lovers in China on winning the World Chess Champion title!

It is the first time in chess history when a Chinese player wins the most significant chess trophy. This victory will undoubtedly encourage our athletes to advance their skills. Also, since the Chess Federation of Russia has been transferred to the Asian Chess Federation, our countries will have more opportunities to meet at the chessboard and exchange valuable experience.

I trust the CFR further cooperation with one of the strongest chess countries will be fruitful, long-lasting and mutually beneficial!
