European Individual Championship Starts in Batumi
Not all rating favorites win in round 1.

On March 17, the first games of the European Individual Championship were played in Batumi, Georgia. It didn't go without surprises at the start. Thus, Ruslan Ponomariov lost to IM Irakli Beradze. Dmitry Jakovenko, David Navara, Maxim Matlakov, Daniil Dubov, Tamir Nabaty, Martyn Kravtsiv, Alexander Motylev, Emil Sutovsky (who played against Anna Ushenina) and some other well-known chess players made draws with their lower rated rivals.
