FIDE World Fischer Random Championship Starts in Reykjavik

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vladimir Fedoseev are entering the field.


The Final Tournament of the 2022 FIDE World Fischer Random Championship will take place in the capital of Iceland on 24-30 October. The event features Wesley So (the reigning FIDE World Fischer Random Champion), Magnus Carlsen (the World Champion, the runner-up of the 2019 FIDE World Fischer Random Championship), Vladimir Fedoseev (Qualifier 1 on Chess.com), Matthias Bluebaum (Qualifier 2 on Chess.com), Hikaru Nakamura (Qualifier 1 on Lichess.org), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Qualifier 2 on Lichess.org), Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson (the Organiser's wildcard), and Ian Nepomniachtchi (FIDE President's wildcard). 

The participants will be divided into two groups, in which they will play a double round-robin event (25-27 October). Each match in the Group Stage will be best-of-2 games with a player having one game with White and one game with black from the same initial position. A player who wins a match will score two points, player who draws a match will score one point, and a player who loses a match will score no points.

The top two players in the standings of each group will qualify for the Knockout Stage (29-30 October), which is composed of the Semifinals and the Final. The matches for the 5th and the 7th places will be held as well. 

Each match in the Knockout Stage will be best-of-4 games. In the event of a tied match, there will be an Armageddon game. 

The time control for each game is 30 moves in 25 minutes, plus 5 minutes for the rest of the game, plus 5 seconds increment per move starting from move 31. 

All matches will start at 6 PM Moscow time. 


The total prize fund is 400,000 US dollars.
