First Round of FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss Played in Riga

It didn't do without surprises.

The first games of the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss events were played in Riga. Maxim Matlakov (Russia), Boris Gelfand (Israel), and Rauf Mamedov (Azerbaijan) lost to their lower-rated opponents. In the women's event, Leya Garifullina (Russia) defeated the tournament's № 6 Zhansaya Abdumalik (Kazakhstan) with the black pieces. Alina Kashlinskaya (Russia) and Elina Danielian (Armenia) lost as well. Nevertheless, the majority of the rating favourites scored made a step forward. Twenty players have a perfect score in the open event and eighteen in the women's.
