Five Rounds of Tolstoy Cup Played in Yasnaya Polyana

Anish Giri won all the games.


The first five rounds of the Tolstoy Cup were played in Yasnaya Polyana on the 11th of September. 

Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation for Culture Vladimir Tolstoy and Director of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-Estate Yasnaya Polyana Ekaterina Tolstaya visited the tournament on the first day. 

On the first match day, Anish Giri won five games: the Dutch grandmaster defeated Boris Gelfand, Kirill Alekseenko, Maxim Matlakov, Nikita Vitiugov, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. 

Standings after Round 5:

1. Anish Giri - 5 points
2-7. Evgeny Tomashvesky, David Paravyan, Boris Gelfand, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Maxim Matlakov, Anton Korobov - 2.5
8. Dmitry Andreikin - 2
9-10. Nikita Vitiugov, Kirill Alekseenko - 1.5.

Thematic posters and unique chess sets, Staunton and Regence, are located in the hall of the Yasnaya Polyana cultural centre. The CFR Chess Museum's curator, candidate of historical sciences Dmitry Oleinikov told the visitors about the items before the start of match day. 

The tournament is broadcast online on the FIDE YouTube channel with the commentaries of grandmaster Evgenij Miroshnichenko.

The final four rounds will be played on the 12th of September starting from 3 PM.
