Fourteen Russian Players Qualify for FIDE World Cup

The European Hybrid Qualification passes into the Swiss tournament.


The decisive round of the European Hybrid Qualification Tournament for the FIDE World Cup (72 players) finished on May 29. The players were fighting for 36 spots for the FIDE World Cup. The event was played in a knock-out system with the matches of two standard games + tiebreak if needed. 

Fourteen Russian players qualified for the FIDE Wold Cup. These are Vladislav Artemiev, Evgeny Tomashevsky, Maxim Matlakov, Vladimir Fedoseev, Sanan Sjugirov, Grigoriy Oparin, Alexander Motylev, Pavel Ponkratov, Evgeny Alekseev, Vadim Zvjaginsev, Boris Savchenko, and Nikita Afanasiev. Our congratulations! 

The best 36 competitors will play a 9-round Swiss tournament for prize distribution on May 30.

It is to be reminded that the participants are playing online from the approved tournament halls. There are two such centres in Russia: in Moscow (Central Chess Club) and in Saint Petersburg (Mednyi Vsadnik chess club).
