Game Six of Carlsen-Karjakin Match Ends Peacefully

The score is 3-3 after the first half.

The first move of the 6th game of the World Chess Championship match was made by the great economist, Harvard Professor, grandmaster Kenneth Rogoff. Like the four previous games, this once started with е2-е4.

The players opted for the Anti-Marshall line of the Ruy Lopez. The World Champion employed a popular sacrificial line – Black carries out the d7-d5 break, but abandons the e5-pawn, obtaining good piece play in return. This line is quite fashionable at the highest level nowadays, so it hardly was a surprise for Karjakin.

On the 14th move the World Champion demonstrated a novelty – с7-с5. Sergey reacted very naturally by bringing his knight towards the center, but it appeared this has been analyzed by his opponent in great depth at home. A forced sequence followed, and after series of sharp moves an endgame with queens and opposite-colored bishops arose. According to the regulations, the players cannot agree to a draw before the move 30, but they signed the scoresheets immediately after reaching this mark.

The first half of the match is in the books. The score is equal, 3-3 – all six games ended in a draw. Saturday, November 19 is a rest day. The 7th game will be played on Sunday, November 20, and Sergey Karjakin will play White again.
