Magnus Carlsen Wins World Rapid Championship

Tan Zhongyi excelled in the women's event.


The World Rapid Championships finished in the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace, Almaty. The tournaments were the Swiss events with 13 rounds in the Open Section and 11 rounds in the Women's Section with the 15+10 time control.

In the Open Section, the World Champion Magnus Carlsen won first place with 10 points out of 13, despite losing to Vladislav Artemiev. Vincent Keymer (2nd place) and Fabiano Caruana (3rd place) are half a point behind. Daniil Dubov, Arjun Erigaisi, Vladimir Fedoseev, Vladislav Artemiev, and Richard Rapport got 9 points each. 

In the Women's Tournament, both Tan Zhongyi and Dinara Saduakassova scored 8.5 points out of 11, so they had to determine the champion in a tie-break match. The Chinese player defeated her rival 1.5-0.5 to become the World Women's Rapid Champion. The bronze medal was won by Shri Savitha, who got 8 points and edged out Aleksandra Goryachkina, Zhansaya Abdumalik, and Humpy Koneru. Alina Bivol, Bela Khotenashvili, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Daria Charochkina are trailing by half a point. 

The Russian participants are playing under the FIDE flag. The World Blitz Championships will start on 29 December. There will be 21 rounds in the Open Section and 17 in the Women's.
