Moscow Junior Championship Starts at RSSU

More than 400 young players are competing.

The opening ceremony of the final tournament of the Moscow Junior Championship took place in the Russian State Social University on November 12. It was attended by Nikita Kim, first vice-president of Moscow Chess Federation, Alexander Soldatov, university vice-principal, Andrey Shashkov, principal of the Moscow Pioneer's Palace, Elena Chernyshkova, president of the Sistema charitable foundation, and Valery Kolotilo, head of development and corporate management of Locomotiv Sports Union.

More than 400 children entered the event, either through qualification or by personal invitation. The championship is played in five age groups with separate events for boys and girls, and will last nine days. Finishing in the top three in each event gives the right to participate in the Russian Junior Championship next year.

Vladimir Palikhata, president of Moscow Chess Federation:

“Moscow Junior Championship is the most important event for us. It allows us to form Moscow Junior Team and to see the most promising players progressing. If we include all the qualification stages, this event brings together about 2,000 young chess players. Recently Moscow Chess Federation joined Chess at Schools project of FIDE. Together with our partners, we want to revive popularity of chess sport in the Russian capital, because chess is an amazing developing tool for children's intelligence.”

The closing ceremony will take place at the RSSU on November 22.
