Russian Men's Team Takes Bronze in Baku

USA and China won the Olympiad.

Natalia Komarova, Governor of Ugra, which will organize the Olympiad in 2020, visited the playing venue on the concluding day of the Baku Olympiad and made a honorary first move in Kramnik-Vocaturo game. Georgian Minister of Sport Tariel Khechikashvili also paid a visit.

Russian men's team defeated Italy 3-1 – wins by Kramnik and Grischuk, draws by Tomashevsky and Nepomniachtchi. 

USA defeated Canada 2.5-1.5, and Ukraine cruised against Slovenia 3.5-0.5.

USA won the gold thanks to their superior tie-break, Ukraine remained on second place. Russia took the bronze, two points behind the winners. 




Russian women's team lost to China 1.5-2.5 – a victory by Pogonina, two losses by Gunina and Goryachkina, and a draw by Kosteniuk. 

China, led by World Champion Hou Yifan, won the gold. Three points behind them were Poland and Ukraine, receiving silver and bronze respectively. 

Russia finished on fourth place. 


The closing ceremony took place in the evening on September 13 at the National Gymnastics Arena. 

Vladimir Kramnik and Valentina Gunina received gold medals for their performance on second board in men's and women's events. Ian Nepomniachtchi became second on the fourth board. 

Ukraine received the Nona Gaprindashvili Cup for the best combined score.

The next Chess Olympiad will take place in Batumi in 2018.
