Russian Teams Become European Champions

Our congratulations!

The final ninth round of the European Team Championships was played in Batumi on November 2.

In the open event, the Russian national team defeated Poland 2.5-1.5 (Kirill Alekseenko won, Dmitry Andreikin, Nikita Vitiugov, and Daniil Dubov made draws) to win gold medals with 15 match points scored.

Teams Ukraine (2nd place) and England (3rd place) are 1 match point behind.

Dmitry Andreikin, Nikita Vitiugov, and Daniil Dubov showed the best results on their boards.

The Russian women's team crushed Turkey 3.5-0.5 (Kateryna Lagno, Olga Girya, and Alina Kashlinskaya won, while Aleksandra Goryachkina made a draw) to become the European champions for the third time in a row. The Russian team has got 16 match points.

Georgia took the second place with 15 points. Team Azerbaijan is third with 14 points.

Kateryna Lagno won individual gold on the second board.

CFR President, Head coach of the Russian national men's chess team Andrey Filatov: "My congratulations to the Russian national teams on the golden double! The women's team has once again shown their highest class and deservedly took the first place having defeated their main rivals in the direct encounter. The men's team was playing in Batumi in an experimental lineup and also won gold having literally grabbed it in the last round. It shows a huge potential of Russian chess before the home Chess Olympiad.

It is important to note that the Russian men's team is the reigning World champion but it was only Dmitry Andreikin from that "golden" lineup who was playing in Batumi. He was excellently holding the first board and basically became the team's leader. I'd like to note as well Kirill Alekseenko's debut in the national team; he was playing in Batumi right after the toughest tournament in the Isle of Man, where he had sensationally taken the third place. Daniil Dubov deserves a special credit: he managed to become the main point-winner of the team, won several decisive games and performed on a very high level".
