Top Grandmasters to Participate in Vugar Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir

Super tournament featuring World Champion to be held from March 30 till April 9.

The sixth tournament in memory of Vugar Gashimov (1986 - 2014) will take place in Shamkir, Azerbaijan, from March 30 till April 9. World strongest chess players will take part in the event: the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway, 2845), Ding Liren (China, 2812), Anish Giri (Netherlands, 2797), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan, 2790), Viswanathan Anand (India, 2779), Alexander Grischuk (Russia, 2771), Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan, 2756), Sergey Karjakin (Russia, 2753), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria, 2740), and David Navara (Czech Republic, 2739).

The match days: March 31 – April 4 and April 6-9. Free day is April 5.

The rounds start at 2 p.m. The final round begins at 1 p.m. (Moscow time). 

Total prize fund is EUR 100,000.

It is to be reminded that Magnus Carlsen won the Vugar Gashimov Memorials three times in 2014, 2015, and 2018, while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov became the winner two times - in 2016 and 2017.

The organizers are SOCAR and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation with support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Republic and Synergy Group.
