Wesley So Defeats Magnus Carlsen in FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship Final

Ian Nepomniachtchi wins match for 3rd place against Fabiano Caruana.


The first official FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship finished in the Henie Onstad Art Center in Høvikodden, just outside Oslo.

In the final match, Wesley So (USA) defeated Magnus Carlsen (Norway) with a lopsided score of 13.5-2.5. The opponents played 4 "slow rapid" games with 45 minutes for 40 moves then 15 minutes to the end of the game, but no increment (there were 3 points for a win and 1.5 for a draw). Then there were two 15-min games with a 2-second increment, with 2 points for a win. 

Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia) won the match for the third place against Fabiano Caruana (USA) 12.5-5.5. The Russian secured the victory after the third "fast rapid" game.

The top prize is $125,000, with $75,000 for the runner-up, $50,000 for 3rd and $40,000 for 4th.
