World Youth Championships Round 1 Results

Some upsets occurred in the starting round.

The first round of the World Youth Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk is in the books. 

In the Open Under 14 tournament, most favorites started with the wins, including Russians Andrey Esipenko and Semyon Lomasov. Kirill Shubin made a draw. The second seed Shant Sargsyan (Armenia) surprisingly lost to the Russian Rostislav Marchuk. 

In the Girls Under 14, top Russian players Elizaveta Solozhenkina, Aleksandra Maltsevskaya, Ekatergina Goltseva, and Anastasia Zotova all won. 

No surprises occurred in the Open Under 16. Among other favorites succeeding in the starting round are Russians Olexandr Triapishko, Sergey Lobanov, and Timur Fakhrutdinov. Alexey Sorokin made a draw. 

Polina Shuvalova, the top seed of Girls Under 16 event, started with a draw. Most other rating favorites, including the Russian Svetlana Tishova, won their games. 

Open Under 18 championship started without sensations – all favorites including Maksim Vavulin (Russia) defeated their lower-rated opponents. 

In Girls Under 18, the top seed Nino Khomeriki (Georgia) started with a draw. Zalina Lingur (Russia) defeated the third seed Laura Unuk (Slovenia). Top Russian players Aleksandra Obolentseva and Bibisara Assaubayeva won their games.
