Andrey Esipenko and Amin Tabatabaei Share Lead at Aeroflot Open

The decisive round is ahead.


Wednesday, March 6, Rounds 7 and 8 of the traditional international chess festival "Aeroflot Open 2024" finished at The Carlton Hotel, Moscow. 

The famous writer, satirist and entertainer Lion Izmailov was the guest of the round. 

Andrey Esipenko (Russia) and Mohammad Amin Tabatabaei (Iran) are co-leading the main tournament with 6.5 points apiece. Trailing half a point behind is Denis Lazavik (Belarus). As many as ten participants have got 5.5 points each.

Pairings of Round 9 are as follows: A. Tabatabaei – A. Esipenko, A. Grischuk – D. Lazavik, A. Martirosyan – A. Abdisalimov, A. Shimanov – N. Yakubboev, S. Drygalov – M. Petrosyan, A. Grebnev – A. Nesterov, S. Ter-Sahakyan – B. Savchenko, etc. 

The Russian Youth Cup goes into Round 9 as well. Here are the age groups' leaders: 

U15, open:

1-2. Bogdan Golovchenko (St. Petersburg), Maxim Ivannikov (Moscow) – 7 points apiece; 3. Georgy Rakhmanov (St. Petersburg) – 6.5;

U15, girls:

1. Diana Khafizova (Moscow) – 7; 2. Ulyana Dudkina (St. Petersburg) – 6.5; 3-4. Elizaveta Evsikova (Moscow), Alisa Chernyshova (Perm Krai) - 6;

U13, open:

1-2. Ruslan Gadzhiev (Republic of Dagestan), Andrey Babochkin (Moscow) – 7 points each, 3. Matvey Pyatnitsyn (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast) – 6.5 points;

U13, girls:

1-3. Tatiana Mozolevskaya, Polina Korobova, Iliana Masaeva (all of Moscow) – with 6.5 points each.

The final round takes place on Thursday, March 7. The round begins at 11 AM. 

The Aeroflot Open International Chess Tournament is organised by the Chess Federation of Russia and the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation with the support of Aeroflot.
