Dmitry Kryakvin Wins Viktor Polyanichko Memorial Blitz

The event took place on March 9 in Rostov-on-Don.

Viktor Polyanichko, Russian Vice-Premier who tragically died on a peacemaking mission in a flashpoint in the Caucasus region, would turn 80 on March 9. In honor of his memory, Our Time newspaper and Future of Motherland foundation organized a mass blitz tournament.

Among the players were grandmasters Alexander Galkin, and Dmitry Kryakvin, international masters Pavel Kotenko, Eduard Khliyan, and Alexander Anoshkin, FIDE Masters Taron Shakhbazyan, Dmitry Elizarov, Viktor Ignatov, Danil Najdin, Vassily Ermolenko, Alexey Sysoenko, Alexander Vorobiov, and Russian National Guard champion Akrady Dezhurko. 

Dmitry Kryakin won the event with 11.5 points in 13 games. Alexander Galkin finished second with 11 points. Taron Shakhbazyan took third with 10 points.

The organizers gave away prizes for all participants of the event. 

Vladimir Kantsyn, the veteran of Rostselmash, Honored Worker of Physical Culture of Russia, was the chief arbiter of the tournament. 

“Taking part in a tournament named after Viktor Polyanichko is a great honor for me”, said Mr. Kantsyn, “also because Polyanichko worked on the Rostselmash in his junior years and played in our chess club.”
