Luga Wins Orphanages Championship

The All-Russian team tournament for orphanages and boarding schools ended in Loo.

The Russian Championship of Orphanages and Boarding Schools ended in Loo near Sochi. This unique event took place for the second time, as a part of the charitable project “Chess to Orphanages”, brought by RCF and Northern Crown foundation. Under this project, chess clubs are being created at orphanages and boarding schools, with textbooks, chess sets, and teaching assistance provided by RCF.

According to Andrey Filatov, this is one of the key stops in RCF's calendar of junior events. The project runs for two and a half years and already cooperates with 64 Russian regions and more than 380 orphanages and boarding schools. “For each of these children, chess can become a ticket to the future, a chance to build a new life. This is why we are paying so much attention to this project. It could not be implemented without active participation of regional authorities and sponsors”, says Mr. Filatov.

The team from Luga, Leningrad Region, collected 24 points and took first place. They will be able to form a team of four under-14 players with at least one girl to participate in the final of the all-Russian Belaya Ladya championship (June 1-9, Sochi).

Krimean Gymnasium for gifted children took second place with 18 points. Orphanage #26 from Ryazan took the bronze with 17.5 points.

The best individual scores produced Mariam Iljasova (Republic of Ingushetia) and Georgiy Agametov (Tver Region).

The winners of chess and non-chess competitions that took place alongside the championship were awarded at the closing ceremony by RCF Executive Director Mark Glukhovsky and Director of Northern Crown foundation Natalia Yunchenkova. Mark Glukhovsky also thanked the management of AkvaLoo Resort and Don Group of Development and Construction Companies for supporting RCF' junior and social projects.

A film created during the championship was premiered at the closing ceremony.
