Sochi Hosts Russian Senior Championship
Round 1 games are played.
On October 7, the first round games of the Russian Senior Championship were played in Sochi. Men are playing in the Higher and First leagues, while the women’s event is being held separately. Not all top seeds managed to win their starting games in the main event. For example, Anatoli Shvedchikov lost to Viktor Melnik. The games Iliushkin - V. Zhelnin, Balashov - Vul, Chudinovskikh - Kalegin, Tunik - Volodin, Bratus - Karasev, Mishuchkov - Shushpanov, Y. Zhelnin - Gubernatorov, Gridnev - Filipenko, and Lopukhin - Archangelsky were drawn.
Some of the rating favorites of the the First league - Yury Gorshkov, Viktor Ignatyev and Vasilij Ibraev - lost their games.
In the women’s event, the majority of the higher-rated players won at the start. The games Fatalibekova - Ovsiannikova and Kabanova - Mednikova were drawn.
