Four Russians Qualify For Quarterfinals of Moscow Grand Prix

Second games of Round 1 were played in the Central Chess Club.


The return games of the first round of the FIDE Grand Prix leg in Moscow were played in the Central Chess Club on May 18. 

The Russian Daniil Dubov defeated the top seed Anish Giri (Netherlands) to win the watch 1.5-0.5 and to qualify for the quarterfinals. 

The Russian derbies Grischuk - Karjakin and Svidler - Vitiugov ended with the victories of Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler. Both of them won their matches 1.5 and advanced to the next round. 

Levon Aronian (Armenia) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) didn't manage to win back in their matches with Ian Nepomniachtchi and Radoslaw Wojtaszek respectively. Thus, the Russian and Polish grandmasters qualified for the next stage.  

The Russian Dmitry Jakovenko lost his encounter against Wei Yi (China) 0.5-1.5. 

Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) made two draws and are going to determine the strongest one on tie-break.  

Wesley So (USA) managed to take revenge against Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland), and the grandmasters will play additional match.



The quarterfinal matches are already determined: Svidler – Wojtaszek and Wei Yi - Nepomniachtchi. Daniil Dubov will play the winner of the Radjabov - Nakamura match, while Alexander Grischuk will face the winner of the So - Duda encounter. 

The tie-break matches will be played on May 19. 

After a drawing of colors, 2 tie-break games are played with time control of 25 minutes for each player + 10 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1. If the score is still, then after a new drawing of colors, 2 games are played with time control of 10 minutes for each player + 10 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1. If the scores are level after these games, then after a new drawing of colors, 2 games are played with time control of 5 minutes for each player + 3 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1.

If the score is still level, then 1 sudden death game is played. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces receives 5 minutes; the player with the black pieces receives 4 minutes whereupon; after move 60, both players receive an increment of 2 seconds per move starting from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.
