Alexandra Kosteniuk Wins European Women's Rapid Championship

Olga Girya took the second place.


The European Women's Rapid Championship, in which more than 100 players took part, finished in Monte Carlo on December 1.

The Russians Alexandra Kosteniuk and Olga Girya scored 9 points out of 11. Thanks to the superior tiebreak, the 12th world champion took the first place having repeated her success in the recent blitz championship. 

Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria), Nino Batsiashvili (Georgia), Valentina Gunina, Alina Kashlinskaya (both from Russia), Pia Cramling (Sweden), and Elisabeth Paehtz (Germany) are 1 point behind. Antoaneta Stefanova edged out her rivals to take the third place.

On December 2-15, Monaco will be hosting the second leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix featuring Aleksandra Goryachkina, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Kateryna Lagno, Valentina Gunina (all from Russia), Pia Cramling (Sweden), Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia), Dronavalli Harika, Humpy Koneru (both from India), Anna Muzychuk, Mariya Muzychuk (both from Ukraine), Elisabeth Paehtz (Germany), and Zhao Xue (China).
