The many-time World Chess Champion, Vice-President of the Chess Federation of Russia, the State Duma Deputy Anatoly Karpov, celebrates his 70th birthday.

Anatoly Karpov holds many chess records, but the main one of them is winning 185 major tournaments. There is no such a player, which has got close to it.

For more than 25 years, Anatoly Karpov was performing on the highest level; his world championship matches against Viktor Korchnoi and Garry Kasparov became milestones in the history of chess and influenced a lot on the theory of practical aspects of the game. Karpov struggled against younger players on equal ground. Thus, the 43-year-old Karpov showed a phenomenal result in the super tournament in Linares in 1994: he scored 11 points out of 13, having edged out the world chess elite of the time, including Kasparov, Anand, and Kramnik.

Mikhail Tal once said that "Karpov’s personality is his playing style. He is as determined in life as he is at the chessboard. That is his main trait."

Anatoly Karpov gives much attention to the popularity of chess. For many years, he has been editor-in-chief of the "64 - Chess Review". He wrote dozens of chess books, which were translated into many languages. The A. Karpov chess books are operating in many countries and 36 regions of Russia. Chess is being taught in 350 schools and 88 kindergartens of the Tyumen region. Anatoly Karpov was one of the originators of such big traditional tournaments in Russia as the Aeroflot Open and the round-robin grandmaster event in Poikovsky.

The Chess Federation of Russia congratulates Anatoly Karpov on his birthday! We wish him robust health, inexhaustible energy, new victories in chess, happiness, and well-being!
