Peter Svidler Lead 2-0 in the World Cup Final

Sergey Karjakin blundered a rook in a drawn position.

The second game of the World Cup Final was played on October 2 in Baku. The players went to the Breyer System of the Ruy Lopez. Svidler showed a very strong novelty, but then misplayed in the position he knew well, and White got a lasting advantage thanks to his bishop pair and better pawn structure. In anticipation of Svidler's time trouble, Karjakin sacrificed a knight, complicating the game. Svidler managed to find the most accurate reply, parrying all White's threats, after which the logical outcome of the game would be a draw. However, Karjakin suddenly committed a terrible blunder, losing a piece permanently, and resigned on the next move.

The match score is 2-0 in Svidler's favor. He needs to collected half a point in the remaining two games.
