Eight Players Lead Russian Championship Higher League

Valentina Gunina has a perfect score in the women's event.

The fourth round of the Russian Championships Higher League was played in Sochi on October 11.

The leaders' games Chigaev - Fedoseev, Rakhmanov - Goganov, and Ponkratov - Antipov ended in draws. The above-mentioned players are leading the race with 3 points as well as Evgeny Alekseev and Aleksei Pridorozhni, who defeated Vsevolod Ovchinnikov and David Paravyan, respectively. Fourteen players have got 2.5 points.

Below you can see several examples from today's round.

Pridorozhni - Paravyan

When a knight is stronger than a bishop, especially before the time control.

38...Ke6?! 39. Nc2! Rb1 40. a6 Be4 41. Nd4+ Kf6 42. Rd7 Rb6 43. a7 Bg2 44. Nc6!, and step by step White won the game.

Makarian - Yuffa

White has a sufficient compensation for two pawns and is ready to take concrete steps:

29. Kg2! Rf7 30. Rh1 a5

30...Ba4 with the idea of Bd7 would have been more precise. Now, the white rooks meet no obstacles on the kingside.

31. Rh6 a4 32. Rbh1 Rgg7 33. Bg6 Rxg6 34. Rxg6, and soon Black resigned.

Tugarin - Obgolts

No initiative goes unpunished: 19. Nd4? g5! White resigned.

In the women's event, Valentina Gunina scored the fourth victory in a row by defeating Yulia Grigorieva. Margarita Schepetkova, Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, Marina Guseva, Baira Kovanova, Leya Garifullina, Ekaterina Goltseva, and Yulia Grigorieva are trailing by 1 point.
