Hikaru Nakamura Wins Third Gibraltar Open in a Row
The American defeated David Anton Gijarro on tie-break.
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 main event ended in favor of Hikaru Nakamura, who wins the tournament for the third consecutive year. David Anton Gijarro, Hikaru Nakamura, and Yu Yangyi all collected 8 out of 10 and had to play a tie-break to determine the winner. First Nakamura defeated Yu Yangyi 3-1, and then finished off Gijarro 1.5-0.5.
Ju Wenjun scored 7 points and won the women's prize. Her compatriot Hou Yifan protested in the last round against the “unfair” pairings that made her play against seven female players during the event. Hou Yifan's final round game lasted five moves: 1.g4 d5 2.f3 e5 3.d3 Qh4+ 4.Kd2 h5 5.h3 hxg4, and White resigns. Later Hou Yifan apologized for this game to chess fans.
