Round 1 of FIDE Grand Swiss Played on the Isle of Man

Not all the favourites started with victories.

Round 1 of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 and FIDE Women's Grand Swiss 2023 was played on the Isle of Man on 25 October. In both tournaments, not all the rating favourites managed to win at the start.

Fabiano Caruana, Richard Rapport, Levon Aronian, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Yu Yangyi, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov won their games in the open tournament. Nakamura – Svane, Ponomariov – Firouzja, Giri – Sadhwani, Mamedov – Gukesh ended in a draw. Santosh Vidit went down to Erwin L'Ami.

Andrey Esipenko defeated Vahap Sanal, and Evgeniy Najer outplayed Dietmar Kolbus. Keymer – Murzin and Ter-Sahakyan – Artemiev ended in draws, and Maxim Matlakov lost to Temur Kuybokarov.

In the women's section, the tournament number one Aleksandra Goryachkina drew Ann Matnadze Bujiashvili, Valentina Gunina defeated Aulia Medina Warda, Leya Garifullina outperformed Lina Nassr, while Polina Shuvalova went down to Eline Roebers.

Both tournaments are part of the qualifications for the current World Championship cycle, with the top two players in the open event qualifying for the 2024 Candidates Tournament and the top two players in the Women’s Grand Swiss qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Candidates.

The total prize fund is $600,000, with $460,000 for the Grand Swiss and $140,000 for the Women’s Grand Swiss.
