Russian Players Chase Leaders on the Isle of Man

The FIDE Grand Swiss goes into Round 8.

The FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 and the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss 2023 resumed on the Isle of Man following a rest day. 
 
In the open tournament, Andrey Esipenko managed to hold a tough position against Arjun Erigaysi in what was a long battle. With 5 points under his belt he is half a point behind the leading Santosh Vidit. Apart from Esipenko, 10 other chess players have scored 5 points.  
 
Evgeniy Najer, who drew Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Vladislav Artemiev, who went down to Yuriy Kuzubov, have scored 4 points each. Maxim Matlakov, who defeated Dennis Wagner, and Volodar Murzin, who drew Pentala Harikrishna, have 3.5 points each. 
 
In the women's competition, the game Aleksandra Goryachkina vs. Anna Muzychuk ended in a draw. With 5.5 points, Rameshbabu Vaishali and Antoaneta Stefanova have caught up with A. Muzychuk to share the lead. Goryachkina is half a point behind them.
 
Leya Garifullina, who drew with Batkhuyag Mongontuul, and Polina Shuvalova, who defeated Ulviyya Fataliyeva, have 4.5 points each. Valentina Gunina defeated Mariam Mkrtchyan and is one point behind her compatriots.

Both tournaments are part of the qualifications for the current World Championship cycle, with the top two players in the open event qualifying for the 2024 Candidates Tournament and the top two players in the Women’s Grand Swiss qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Candidates.

The total prize fund is $600,000, with $460,000 for the Grand Swiss and $140,000 for the Women’s Grand Swiss.
