Russian Players Fight for Spots to Candidates Tournament on the Isle of Man

Round 3 of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 and FIDE Women's Grand Swiss 2023 finished on the Isle of Man.  Andrey Esipenko (Russia), Fabiano Caruana, Samuel Sevian (both USA), Alexey Sarana and Aleksandr Predke (both Serbia), Arjun Erigaisi (India), Erwin L'Ami (Netherlands), Marc'Andria Maurizzi (France), Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan), and Ramazan Zhalmakhanov (Kazakhstan) have scored 2.5 points out of 3 apiece.  

In the women's tournament, Tan Zhongyi (China) and Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine) are ahead with 3 points each. The Russians Aleksandra Goryachkina and Polina Shuvalova have 2 points each. 

Both tournaments are part of the qualifications for the current World Championship cycle, with the top two players in the open event qualifying for the 2024 Candidates Tournament and the top two players in the Women’s Grand Swiss qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Candidates.

The total prize fund is $600,000, with $460,000 for the Grand Swiss and $140,000 for the Women’s Grand Swiss.
