The first round of the European Team Championships was played in Terme Čatež, Slovenia, on the 12th of November. The ceremonial first moves in both events were made by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.

In the open section, Team Russia defeated Greece 3-1 (Kirill Alekseenko and Andrey Esipenko won their games, while Alexander Grischuk and Vladislav Artemiev made draws).

The majority of rating favourites achieved victories. However, an unexpected result happened in Norway vs England match, where the latter lost by a narrow margin.
