Russians Win Medal Standings at FIDE World Cadets Championship

Our chess players have taken 4 medals.

The FIDE World Cadets Championship among boys and girls under 8, 10, and 12 years old finished in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt). 42 Russian chess players took part in the competition. Overall, the tournament gathered 504 young athletes.

The U8 World Champion is Russian Roman Shogdzhiev, who secured the title with one round to go. All in all, the winner scored 11 out of 11 points. Aidan Gafurov won the silver medal in the same age group with 9 points.

Bodhana Sivanandan (England) became the U8 World Champion among girls with a perfect score. With 9 points under his belt, the U10 boys tournament was taken by Danis Kuandykuly (Kazakhstan). Nikolay Kleymenov shared 2-4 places, but ended up fourth due to additional tie-breakers.

In the U10 girls' group, Xue Tianhao (China) took the first place with 10.5 points. Kristina Zavivaeva (Russia) won the bronze medal with 8.5 points.

Diana Preobrazhenskaya, who scored 9.5 points, took second place in the U12 girls' event. The Russian fell behind Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana (Sri Lanka) via additional tie-breakers. Dau Huong Duy (Vietnam) became the U12 World Champion with 9.5 points.

Russian chess players dominated the medals table, winning four medals at the championship. This is the best result of our young athletes since 2019.

President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey Filatov: "I congratulate our players on their brilliant performance at the World Children's Chess Championship! In particular, I would like to comment on the phenomenal result of Roman Shogdzhiev, who has won the gold medal with a perfect score. Our talented chess players have once again delighted their many fans. The boys are getting better every year, which allows us to look to the future with confidence. A great merit in their education belongs to their families, parents, teachers, and coaches.

Over the years, various coaches, including specialists of the Russian national team, have worked with the children. For example, International Master Mikhail Shereshevsky has been working with Roman Shogdzhiev for the second year in a row thanks to the M. Dvoretsky Prize. GM Yakov Geller has been working with him for half a year, and he has been cooperating with GM Konstantin Sakaev as part of the national team coaches' lessons for young chess players. GM Dmitry Kryakvin has been working with Diana Preobrazhenskaya for two years, for which she was awarded the M. Dvoretsky prize and grants from the Chess Federation of Russia. Diana, Roman and other boys and girls regularly visit the training camps of the grandmaster centres organised by the Chess Federation of Russia.

In general, we have connected 14 of the strongest children with six leading coaches of the Russian national teams, but their individual coaches also continue to work with them. And the results are already out there for everyone to see: this success at the Children's World Championship, Aleksey Grebnev's victory at the Asian Junior Championship, Arseniy Nesterov's two silver medals at the Junior World Championship and Rapid Championship, as well as medals at the Asian Schools Championship and the Western Asian Youth Championship."
