Viktor Tchernyi Turns 75

The famous Russian junior coach celebrates his birthday.

Viktor Tchernyi was born on August 7, 1941. He picked up chess when he was studying in the 6th grade, which was quite late even by the standards of that time. His first trainer was Boris Voronkov, father of the chess writer and historian Sergey Voronkov. Cherny's study group was very strong – USSR junior champions Alexander Tomson and Alexander Kuinzhi, future grandmaster Vladimir Liberzon, future masters Makhach Tataev, Alexander Khramtsov, and Alexander Zolotariov.

“Boris Grigorievich Voronkov was my only trainer, and he helped me not only in chess”, recalls Viktor. “He often visited my schools to save me from trouble, which I often called upon myself by my bad behavior. Voronkov always told them that I am a very promising chess players and must not be expelled.”

Viktor Tchernyi became a candidate master, then a FIDE Master. His peak rating was 2345.  Won international tournaments in Potsdam (1995), and Sestroretsk (2003). Moscow Senior Champion of 2011.

Among his students are master Vladimir Vulfson (now also a successful coach), grandmasters Mikhail Kobalia, Andrey Rytchagov, Alexey Kim, Irina Zakurdyaeva, chess journalist Ilya Odessky, chess publisher Murad Amannazarov.

Viktor Tchernyi has two sons and a daughter.
