World Cup Round 1 Tie-Break Results

Boris Gelfand and Rustam Kasimdzhanov are sent packing.

The tie-breaks of the World Cup's 1st round were played today in Baku. 

Rapid chess brought victories to Lenier Dominguez, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Evgeny Tomashevsky, Nikita Vitiugov, Vladimir Fedoseev, Ernesto Inarkiev, Teimour Radjabov, Gadir Guseinov, Lu Shanglei, David Navara, Hou Yifan, Sergey Zhigalko, Wang Hao, Laurent Fressinet, Lazaro Bruzon, and Alexander Onischuk. 

Boris Gelfand's loss to Cristobal Henriquez Villagra became the sensation of the day. The winner of the 2009 World Cup was sent home already in the first round. 

Igor Lysyj and Czaba Balogh advanced in long blitz games (10 minutes + 10 seconds per move).

Alexander Grischuk, Dmitry Jakovenko, Anton Kovalev, and Alexander Motylev prevailed in blitz games. 

Gabriel Sargissian and Mateusz Bartel fought in the Armageddon game. The Armenian grandmaster played Black and managed to hold to a draw, which gave him the match win. 

Maxim Matlakov, Ivan Bukavshin, Boris Grachev, and Ilja Iljushenok were knocked out from the World Cup.
