Round 5 of FIDE World Cup Begins in Baku
It produced many decisive games.
The first games of Round 5 of the FIDE World Cup – the round-of-16 in the Open event and quarterfinals in the Women's tournament – have finished in the city of Baku.
The Open section has been rich in decisive games. Magnus Carlsen outplayed Vasyl Ivanchuk as White, Leinier Dominguez defeated Alexey Sarana, Wang Hao lost to Dommaraju Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi outplayed Nils Grandelius, and Saleh Salem went down to Nijat Abasov.
Ian Nepomniachtchi drew Santosh Vidit. The games between F. Caruana and J.-K. Duda and F. Berkes and R. Praggnanandhaa also ended in a draw.
In the Women's section Tan Zhongyi outperformed Bella Khotenashvili, and Polina Shuvalova went down to Nurgyul Salimova. A. Goryachkina – H. Dronavalli and A. Muzychuk - E. Paehtz ended in a draw.
The return games of Round 5 are scheduled on Sunday, August 13.
